According to a report by OilPrice.com, the United States is leading a global push for small modular reactors (SMRs) and even smaller microreactors. These units offer a power capacity of up to 300 MW, which is roughly one-third of the output of traditional plants. Because they are manufactured in factories and transported to sites, they are cheaper and faster to build than conventional nuclear infrastructure and can be installed in remote areas.

The U.S. government is particularly focused on microreactors, which produce between 1 MW and 20 MW of thermal energy. These compact systems can be moved by truck or plane and operate for a decade without needing new fuel. The Department of Energy is backing these designs to assist with emergency responses and power microgrids in rural locations, with the goal of significantly increasing national nuclear output by 2050.

The U.S. Army has emerged as a primary driver for this technology, planning to allocate $2.2 billion to five different firms for reactor construction at domestic military bases. Companies such as Westinghouse and General Atomics are expected to deploy at least one operational microreactor by late 2028. Private sector interest is also growing, with firms like Aalo targeting the high energy demands of artificial intelligence data centers.

Jeff Waksman, a senior official for the Army, described the initiative as the "spear tip" for all advanced reactors in the country. To support these efforts, federal authorities are easing regulations for innovative nuclear designs. The Army's funding is intended to help specialized firms overcome development hurdles, ensuring that microreactors can self-adjust safely and provide reliable energy for national security and critical infrastructure.
