According to Splash 247, the shipping industry is currently experiencing a period of record-high earnings, with the ClarkSea Index reaching new peaks. Freight rates for tankers have hit levels previously considered impossible, while container and dry bulk sectors remain resilient. Despite these strong indicators, the report suggests that the market may be nearing the top of its cycle as asset values for older vessels now frequently exceed the cost of newbuildings.

The container sector appears most vulnerable to a downturn due to a massive delivery schedule and the potential return of vessels to the Suez Canal route. Splash 247 notes that analysts expect fleet capacity to grow significantly through 2029, while demand growth is projected to lag behind. This imbalance is further complicated by a record orderbook of 15.6 million teu, which could lead to weakening market conditions as early as late 2026.

Tanker markets are currently defined by extreme volatility, with some daily earnings for suezmax and VLCC vessels surpassing several hundred thousand dollars. However, Splash 247 reports that transportation costs have become so high they may begin to restrict oil demand. While geopolitical tensions continue to support these elevated rates by forcing inefficient trading patterns, a growing tanker orderbook and a lack of vessel scrapping present long-term risks to market stability.

In contrast, the dry bulk sector maintains a more balanced outlook. Support for this segment stems from genuine growth in tonne-miles and firm Chinese demand rather than temporary disruptions alone. While experts quoted by Splash 247 anticipate a slight softening by 2027, the sector is generally viewed as better protected than tankers or containers due to more manageable fleet growth and structural changes in global trading distances.
