How commodity brokers are repricing counterparty risk

Credit terms, not commission, are becoming the competitive battleground for brokerage desks.

Brokerage desks are competing on credit structure as much as on price discovery.

Brokerage has always been an information business. Increasingly it is also a credit business.

As bank appetite for smaller physical traders has narrowed, brokers have found themselves arbitrating not just price but whether a counterparty can perform. Desks that can structure prepayment, letters of credit and cargo-backed financing are winning mandates that would once have gone on relationship alone.

The shift has consequences for market structure. Smaller intermediaries without balance-sheet support are consolidating or specialising into niches where physical knowledge still outweighs financial capacity.

For traders, the practical advice from several desks is consistent: document performance history, and treat credit lines as a strategic asset rather than an administrative one.
