Intermodal Savings Surge: Up to 49% ROI for Shippers
Intermodal transport costs have reached multi-year lows compared to trucking as contract rates for road haulage continue to climb while rail-based pricing remains steady.

Intermodal shipping is currently offering the most significant financial advantages seen in years, according to data from FreightWaves. During a market update, Julie Van de Kamp highlighted that while truckload contract and spot rates have increased significantly, intermodal pricing has remained relatively flat. This widening price gap is particularly visible on high-traffic routes connecting East Coast hubs like Harrisburg and Atlanta to major logistics centers in the Midwest and California.
Specific corridors are demonstrating the strength of this trend, with truckload rates on the Harrisburg to Atlanta lane rising much faster than their rail counterparts. Over the last quarter, corridors originating in Atlanta and Harrisburg have consistently topped savings indexes. Van de Kamp suggested that current railway merger activity might be preventing rail carriers from raising their prices, as companies avoid actions that could draw opposition from customers or regulators during the consolidation process.
As freight volumes shift toward rail, the industry is monitoring whether this demand will eventually trigger a rise in intermodal contract pricing. While Van de Kamp previously estimated potential rate hikes of up to 8 percent, she noted that competing railroads may currently prioritize market share over price increases. She observed that the present environment provides a unique window for shippers to reassess their freight mix, stating that the current market represents a "meaningful opportunity to evaluate mode conversion."
