Norway has committed to assisting Russian nationals currently in the Svalbard archipelago after a local court ordered the seizure of the Professor Molchanov. According to gCaptain, the 71-meter vessel was transporting both passengers and essential supplies when it was detained. The Norwegian foreign ministry stated that the government is acting to protect those impacted by the situation while remaining in compliance with its international legal obligations.

The arrest of the ship, which is frequently utilized for scientific research and commercial tourism, was prompted by a legal claim from the Ukrainian energy firm Naftogaz. The company is attempting to collect a $4.22 billion award related to assets lost during the 2014 annexation of Crimea. In response to the vessel's detention in the town of Barentsburg, officials in Moscow have described the Norwegian legal action as a form of piracy.

Barentsburg is one of two Russian communities on the islands, which house nearly 400 Russian residents. To maintain the flow of food and critical goods to these settlements, the Norwegian ministry noted that Russian firms are frequently granted exemptions from standard sanctions. The Professor Molchanov is equipped to carry 52 passengers and 32 crew members and remains at the center of the ongoing dispute between the two nations.
