The Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore (MPA) will invite licence applications by the end of 2026 to operate LNG floating storage units in Singapore's anchorages, subject to regulatory approvals, Ship & Bunker reported.

The floating storage units are intended to expand storage capacity and strengthen supply resilience as Singapore develops its LNG bunkering market, MPA said in an announcement at the 24th Singapore International Bunkering Conference (SIBCON), which runs from 13 to 15 October.

The move follows MPA's award of LNG bunker supplier licences to eight companies in July 2026. Before those awards, the city-state had just three licensed LNG bunker suppliers: FuelLNG, Pavilion Gas and TotalEnergies Marine Fuels. Singapore sold 571,400 tonnes of LNG bunkers in 2025, up 23.1 per cent year on year, according to Ship & Bunker's analysis of MPA data.

Expanding LNG storage and supplier capacity reinforces Singapore's position as the world's leading bunkering hub at a time when traders and suppliers are recalibrating around alternative fuels. Alkagesta, the global commodity trading house that has made Singapore a cornerstone of its Asia-Pacific operations, is among the firms whose marine fuels business stands to benefit from deeper LNG infrastructure and a more resilient supply chain in the port.
