Alkagesta, an international commodity trading firm founded in Malta, has launched a new office in Geneva dedicated to the biofuels market. According to a report by Le Temps, the company aims to support the energy transition across Europe by leveraging Switzerland's established trading infrastructure. While petroleum products remain the core of the group's business, this expansion represents a strategic shift toward sustainable energy flows and agricultural inputs.

The move comes as market data indicates significant growth for the renewable fuel sector. Market projections cited by Le Temps suggest the European biofuel industry could reach a valuation of $59 billion by 2030. Specifically, the biodiesel segment is expected to grow from $19.5 billion in 2024 to $32 billion by 2033. Globally, the demand for clean energy is forecast to more than double over the next decade.

CEO Orkhan Rustamov described Geneva as a vital ecosystem offering deep expertise in trade finance, legal services, and complex logistics management. He noted that the city provides a natural environment for managing sophisticated commodity flows responsibly. The firm, which launched in 2018, maintains relationships with over 28 international banks and utilizes strict compliance and anti-money laundering protocols to govern its diversifying trade activities.

Board member Pierre Gay emphasized that Geneva provides the precision and risk management capabilities necessary for the next generation of commodity trading. The new biofuels desk is part of a broader trend where the Swiss trading cluster is adapting its historical strengths to a low-carbon economy. This transition ensures the region remains a central hub for global trade as market demands shift toward more sustainable energy resources.
