Malta-based commodity trading and bunkering firm Alkagesta has officially joined the International Bunker Industry Association as a corporate member. According to a report by Ship & Bunker, the company issued a statement on Thursday confirming the move as part of its ongoing commitment to the marine fuel sector. The firm intends to leverage the membership to participate in industry-wide discussions regarding the evolving landscape of marine energy and maritime logistics.

The membership comes as Alkagesta prepares for significant regulatory shifts in the Mediterranean region. Starting in 2025, the company plans to distribute ultra-low sulfur fuel oil throughout the Central and Eastern Mediterranean. This initiative is a direct response to the establishment of a new emission control area in the Mediterranean Sea, which requires vessels to adhere to stricter environmental standards regarding the sulfur content of their fuel.

Beyond its Mediterranean expansion, the company has recently increased its global presence by establishing new operational hubs. Alkagesta has launched a specialized biofuel trading desk located in Geneva to address growing demand for alternative energy sources. Furthermore, the company has secured strategic storage infrastructure at the Horizon terminal in Singapore, a move designed to strengthen its logistical capabilities in the world's largest bunkering hub.

Mithat Ciftcioglu, the marine distribution director at Alkagesta, described the industry body as a vital platform for influencing the direction of the marine energy market. Ciftcioglu noted that the association provides a space for the company to share its knowledge of structured trade while collaborating on innovation and regulatory compliance. The firm views this engagement as a way to contribute to the future of the bunkering industry alongside other global members.
