Shipping: The EU ETS and the Energy Complex
European Union Allowance prices strengthened in August as energy market volatility and industrial recovery bolstered demand for carbon credits within the maritime and power sectors.
Carbon prices in the European Union Emissions Trading System maintained an upward trajectory through August, according to a report from shipbroker Intermodal published by Hellenic Shipping News. Despite typical holiday liquidity drops, the December 2026 contract averaged over 82 euros per ton. This price stability is largely attributed to volatility in the natural gas market, where geopolitical tensions and competition for LNG shipments have driven up fuel costs and shifted utility demand toward carbon-intensive energy sources.
Intermodal Senior Analyst Nikos Tagoulis noted that improving economic indicators are further supporting demand for allowances. The manufacturing sector in the eurozone recently recorded its strongest performance in four years, marked by rising export numbers and increased factory employment. These industrial gains, combined with fuel-switching economics where coal becomes more competitive than expensive gas, have prompted utilities and manufacturers to secure more carbon permits to cover their projected emissions output.
The shipping industry faces growing compliance pressure as the maritime sector's integration into the carbon market continues to phase in. By 2026, vessel operators must surrender allowances for 70% of their verified emissions from the previous year, moving to full coverage by 2027. While investment funds have recently scaled back speculative positions, commercial entities are increasing their forward exposure to hedge against the rising costs of voyages governed by the environmental regulatory framework.
Future price directions will also be influenced by potential regulatory shifts and the possible linkage between the European and British carbon markets. A July proposal by the European Commission could potentially slow the reduction of the emissions cap after 2030, which might ease supply constraints. Additionally, a future connection with the UK trading system could expand the available pool of allowances, though the timeline for such an agreement remains uncertain following political changes in the United Kingdom.
