Federal Training Ship Empire State VII Ordered to Norfolk Ahead of U.S. Navy Mission
The SUNY Maritime training ship Empire State VII has been ordered to Norfolk to undergo flight deck certification before commencing a classified mission for the U.S. Navy.

The SUNY Maritime College training vessel, Empire State VII, is scheduled to leave New York for Norfolk, Virginia, at the end of September. According to gCaptain, the ship will spend a month at the Virginia facility undergoing flight deck certification and activation procedures. This deployment follows a recent order from the U.S. Maritime Administration to prepare the vessel for an undisclosed federal assignment supporting national security requirements.
The Maritime Administration, or MARAD, previously identified an urgent need for the ship to assist the Military Sealift Command. Documents indicate the vessel was selected because no other appropriate ship was available for the specific mission timeframe. The federal government expects to utilize the ship for approximately 170 days, describing the deployment as a "compelling strategic necessity" for the nation's defense operations.
While the ship's specific destination after Norfolk has not been made public, SUNY Maritime President Rear Admiral John Okon noted that the decision was made by federal authorities rather than the college. The loss of the primary training vessel for several months presents logistical hurdles for students. The college administration is currently developing plans to ensure that academic schedules and graduation requirements remain unaffected by the ship's absence.
Delivered in 2023, the Empire State VII is the first in a new class of National Security Multi-Mission Vessels. These ships are designed to function as training platforms for merchant marine officers while maintaining the capability to support federal emergencies. The current deployment serves as an early test of the vessel’s dual-purpose design, shifting it from a classroom environment to active support for U.S. Navy logistics.
