A minimum of six individuals lost their lives when a high-speed ferry capsized during a transit between Kyrenia and Tasucu, according to reporting by gCaptain. The vessel, identified as the Filojet, was carrying an estimated 267 people, including eight crew members, at the time of the incident. Turkish Cypriot Prime Minister Unal Ustel confirmed the death toll through official state media channels.

Search and rescue efforts involving coastguard vessels and a backup helicopter have successfully recovered 172 survivors as of Wednesday afternoon. The emergency response began after the ferry started taking on water approximately four miles away from the coast of Kyrenia. Authorities have not yet determined the specific circumstances that caused the vessel to lose buoyancy and overturn in the open sea.

Regional officials, including the transport minister for the northern Cypriot administration, have arrived at the scene to manage the ongoing recovery mission. Transport Minister Erhan Arikli stated in a broadcast that the cause of the water intake remains unknown. The rescue operations continue as teams search for the remaining passengers who were on board the ferry when it encountered distress.

The incident occurred on a standard maritime route connecting the self-proclaimed Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus with southern Turkey. The Filojet is a high-speed craft designed for passenger transport across this segment of the Mediterranean. Local maritime authorities are expected to launch a formal investigation into the vessel's stability and technical condition once the search phase concludes.
