CBP finds $9.5M in meth hidden inside detergent shipment at Texas border
Customs officers at the Texas border seized over 1,000 pounds of methamphetamine disguised as a commercial soap shipment arriving from Mexico.

Border agents at the Roma International Bridge intercepted a massive narcotics haul concealed within a commercial vehicle. According to FreightWaves, U.S. Customs and Border Protection discovered 240 packages of suspected methamphetamine hidden inside a 2012 tractor-trailer. The vehicle had entered the crossing from Mexico with documentation claiming the cargo consisted of laundry detergent.
Federal personnel utilized specialized scanning technology and canine units to inspect the freight after the truck was moved to a secondary screening area. The search revealed approximately 1,071 pounds of the illicit substance, which officials estimated to be worth more than $9.57 million. Port Director Andres Guerra noted that "drug smugglers sometimes try to hide in plain sight" but highlighted the vigilance of border staff.
Following the discovery, the tractor-trailer, the narcotics, and the unnamed driver were transferred to the Roma Police Department for further processing. Local law enforcement has launched a criminal investigation into the incident. At this time, federal authorities have not named the specific carrier or the intended recipient of the detergent shipment, nor have they filed formal charges.
