Deputies recover $150K in New Balance shoes after BNSF boxcar burglary
Law enforcement officials in San Bernardino County apprehended a suspect and reclaimed a massive shipment of stolen New Balance sneakers taken from a BNSF boxcar.
Authorities in Southern California successfully retrieved over $150,000 worth of New Balance footwear following a burglary targeting BNSF Railroad assets. According to a report by FreightWaves, deputies from the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department responded to reports of individuals infiltrating railcars near the Mojave Desert community of Daggett on Monday morning.
During the response, officers identified a vehicle that corresponded with descriptions of the suspects traveling along Interstate 40. After a brief traffic stop and a foot pursuit, police arrested Leonardo Martinez Navarre, a 29-year-old resident of Perris. BNSF Police subsequently inspected the vehicle and confirmed that the high-value cargo had been removed from one of their boxcars.
While the specific route and destination of the train remain undisclosed, investigators are continuing to search for other individuals who may have participated in the breach. The sheriff’s department noted that freight theft can rapidly move inventory from rail to highway, and officials are currently seeking additional information from the public regarding case number 082601378.
