Klaus-Michael Kühne, a prominent figure in the global logistics sector, died this past Sunday at age 89. As reported by FreightWaves, Kühne served as the longtime leader of Kuehne+Nagel, a company founded by his grandfather. He originally joined the family business in 1958 and assumed the role of chief executive officer in 1966. Under his management, the organization transitioned into an international powerhouse, eventually moving its headquarters to Switzerland and entering the public market in 1994.

During his tenure, Kühne was instrumental in expanding the firm’s reach into new markets, including the opening of its first office in China in 1979. Beyond his leadership at the logistics giant, he held significant ownership stakes in other major transport entities, including roughly 30% of the shipping line Hapag-Lloyd and approximately 17% of Lufthansa. Since 2011, he had served as the honorary chairman of the board while supporting industry education through the Kühne Logistics University.

Current company leadership and industry peers have acknowledged his role in modernizing supply chain management and freight forwarding. Stefan Paul, the present CEO of Kuehne+Nagel, noted that Kühne consistently pushed the organization to "think internationally" while pursuing growth. The firm, which remains among the top five logistics providers globally by revenue, indicated that its current management board remains committed to maintaining the entrepreneurial trajectory established during Kühne’s decades of service.
