Topic, TSUNEISHI SHIPBUILDING and OceanWings complete rigid tiltable wingsail retrofit aboard the bulk carrier MARIA TOPIC
A collaboration between Topic, TSUNEISHI SHIPBUILDING, and OceanWings has finalized the installation of a rigid wingsail system on the Ultramax bulk carrier MARIA TOPIC.
According to Hellenic Shipping News, the dry bulk vessel MARIA TOPIC has resumed commercial operations following a wind-assisted propulsion upgrade at a Japanese shipyard. The installation of OceanWings rigid wingsails was designed to demonstrate that existing merchant ships can be successfully modified to lower fuel use and environmental impact. This project marks a significant step in the industrial application of wind technology for the global dry bulk sector.
The retrofit was completed within a standard dry dock window, showcasing the ability of project partners to manufacture and deploy specialized hardware without disrupting typical maintenance schedules. Industry leaders noted that the project highlights the feasibility of integrating robust, tiltable sail systems into the current global fleet. Alex Albertini, CEO of Topic, stated that the company is continuing to invest in "practical technologies that reduce fuel consumption and emissions" through such upgrades.
Financial and technical support for the modifications came from the European WHISPER project, an initiative backed by the Horizon Europe program. This consortium involves thirteen partners working to validate modular energy solutions for the maritime industry. Following the completion of this work, the involved companies intend to present data regarding the ship's operational performance and behavior during a scheduled industry event in September 2026.
