Alkagesta has announced its entry into the metals trading sector through the creation of Alkanavex, a Malta-based joint venture with French steel specialist Navex SAS. According to Malta Today, this strategic move marks a diversification for Alkagesta, which holds a majority stake in the new entity. The company is currently undergoing legal formalization and operational integration following two years of collaborative planning to align the governance and commercial models of the two participating organizations.

The new venture will initially focus on the steel trade, a sector considered critical to global manufacturing and infrastructure development. This expansion aligns with Alkagesta's long-term objective to move beyond its traditional focus on petroleum products, fertilizers, and biofuels. By leveraging the existing risk management and corporate governance frameworks of its parent company, Alkanavex intends to build an integrated platform for industrial materials, supported by established compliance practices and a proven global logistics network.

Navex SAS, the junior partner in the venture, contributes significant expertise in steel sourcing and distribution. The French company is led by Chief Executive Officer Jean-Pierre Artigala, who brings over 50 years of experience from major industry groups such as ArcelorMittal. Navex primarily sources steel from China and maintains a customer base across East and West Africa. Artigala noted that the partnership provides Navex with access to Alkagesta’s financial resources while maintaining the firm's operational heritage.

Established in 2018, Alkagesta operates a multinational network with 17 offices and trade flows exceeding 7 million metric tons annually. The company manages extensive storage capacities across Europe and Asia and maintains relationships with 28 international banks. Leadership at the firm indicated that the move into metals is a natural evolution for the group, describing Alkanavex as a "globally competitive steel trading platform" designed to capitalize on growing global demand for industrial electrification and construction materials.
