Marine fuels provider Alkagesta is exploring the expansion of its ultra-low sulfur fuel oil supply operations into Spain, according to a report by Ship & Bunker. The company intends to apply for a local trading license that would authorize it to distribute ULSFO and B24 biofuel blends within the country. This strategic move is a direct reaction to the establishment of the new emission control area in the Mediterranean region earlier this year.

The company emphasized that Spain occupies a critical position in the maritime industry, acting as a primary gateway for European Union commerce and a central hub for container shipping. According to Ship & Bunker, major ports such as Algeciras, Valencia, and Barcelona have already enhanced their infrastructure to accommodate the distribution of compliant fuels. These upgrades are designed to ensure a consistent supply of lower-emission energy sources as shipping regulations tighten.

Since the Mediterranean emission control area was implemented in May, Alkagesta has successfully distributed 500,000 metric tonnes of ULSFO across the Central and Eastern Mediterranean markets. The firm views the Spanish infrastructure, including facilities at Bilbao, Tarragona, and Algeciras, as essential for the regional transition toward low-emission maritime operations. By securing a license, the firm aims to facilitate the industry's shift toward stricter sulfur limits through its supply network.

The firm stated that Spanish ports are central to the distribution of transition fuels, supporting the broader Mediterranean shipping community. Alkagesta noted that the country's strategic role as a bunkering hub makes it an ideal location for the introduction of ULSFO and specialized biofuels. The planned expansion reflects a growing demand for compliant energy products as vessel operators adjust their procurement strategies to meet modern environmental standards in European waters.
