Employment in the truck transportation sector rose by 4,800 positions to reach a total of 1,470,300 in the latest Bureau of Labor Statistics report. According to FreightWaves, this figure represents the highest staffing level for the industry since October. Despite this monthly growth, the sector still employs approximately 10,000 fewer workers than it did during the same period last year due to a general downward trend in hiring.

David Spencer of Arrive Logistics told FreightWaves that a single month of growth does not necessarily indicate a permanent shift in market conditions. He noted that similar gains in April were quickly erased by subsequent declines. However, Spencer pointed to recent stability in spot rates and a lack of volatility following the Labor Day holiday as important context for interpreting the new labor statistics.

While trucking saw gains, the warehousing sector experienced its second monthly decline, with staffing levels falling 32,000 below year-ago totals. In contrast, long-distance truckload driver employment showed some resilience, increasing by nearly 5,000 jobs since January. Conversely, the rail sector added 900 jobs in the latest update, even as total rail employment remains lower than levels recorded one year ago.

Economist Aaron Terrazas suggested that initial reports of labor softness in previous months have been mitigated by upward revisions. Data from Superior Trucking Payroll Service further indicated that driver pay indexes remain higher than last year, despite a slight dip in August. Additionally, driver turnover rates have stabilized into single digits, retreating from the double-digit percentages observed earlier in the year.
