Consumer expectations for rapid, no-cost shipping are putting significant financial pressure on retail logistics budgets. According to FreightWaves, the final leg of the delivery journey now accounts for 40% of total supply chain expenses. This segment is often managed by individual dispatchers who must navigate constant disruptions like vehicle accidents, driver shortages, and urgent customer inquiries.

To address these challenges, delivery management firm FarEye has introduced an AI-powered tool named PILOT. Gaurav Srivastava, the company's co-founder, stated that the system acts as an autonomous agent capable of planning routes and sourcing carriers over a full shift. By integrating with existing software, the technology allows humans to oversee the process while the AI handles high-volume decision-making.

The software assists retailers, such as Tractor Supply, in determining the most cost-effective way to move goods. It evaluates whether to use internal fleets or external carriers like FedEx based on real-time data rather than rigid rules. Srivastava noted that the tool focuses on the "planning and orchestration of the last mile," helping companies adapt as online sales outpace traditional in-store growth.
